MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. It was created by ASHRAE (the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) to give you a standardized way to compare filters across brands. Higher numbers mean finer filtration, but also more airflow resistance.

Does my HVAC filter remove VOCs?+
No. Standard pleated HEPA and MERV filters only capture particles, they cannot absorb gases or volatile organic compounds. To remove VOCs (paint fumes, cleaning product off-gassing, formaldehyde), you need activated carbon media, which is found in some air purifiers but not standard HVAC filters. If VOCs are a concern, add a standalone air purifier with a carbon filter.
What is the difference between MERV and MPR ratings?+
